Bose is well known for great innovations in audio products engineering and their Products have spread far and wide from home audio, to marine audio and even MP3 devices.
What is less know about Bose is their quiet, but formidable presence in Car Audio systems, where Bose has been designing complete audio systems for many high-end car models for decades. The list of car models that come equipped with Bose audio systems is too large to list, but some of the technologies employed to produce the superb sound quality that Bose is known for, are somewhat the same.
One of the main characteristics of Bose car audio is their patented Audio Pilot, which is a noise reduction technology that continually makes adjustments to the audio output in the car in response to the levels of background noise.
Audio Pilot works by employing a tiny microphone built into the audio system, which sends the information of the sound it picks up in the car back to a digital signal processor, where the sound in the car is compared to what the audio system is sending out and any sound not coming from the audio system is identified as background noise.
Background noises can be anything from the humming coming from the tires to open windows in the car. The digital processor not only identifies these back ground noises, but it is also able to determine what levels of the music spectrum inside the car are being distorted by the noise and sends a signal to another digital module in the system called a Compensation Algorithm.
The Compensation Algorithm then works to cancel out the distortion created by the noise by amplifying the particular sound level being affected. For example, if the drums in the song are being distorted by humming from the tires, it will amplify the drum levels until it gets a signal back from the microphone that the sound quality in the car matches what is being sent out by the system.
Bose may not be the dominating force in Car Audio, but with innovations like this, they certainly make a great statement.
